It has been over a year now since we as a club started using a new technology called MapRun
We were fortunate as a club that when the challenges of 2020 hit, we had the knowledge and experience to switch to our MapRun Challenge series. This was hugely popular, helping to keep people active and engaged in a safe and fun way. Over 1500km (932miles) have been run collectively in our MapRun Challenge Series. We have also been able to work collaboratively with Deeside Orienteering Club and Manchester and District Orienteering Club producing MapRun Challenges in Sandbach and Congleton – something we hope to do more of in the future.
As a club we pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming club which encourages everyone to get involved. What an amazing development from Peter Effeney from Ugly Gully Orienteers in Australia who has not only developed a fantastic GPS orienteering based app, but has revolutionised the sport! The MapRun app has gone through a rapid stage of development in such a short time frame. The recent development of MapRunG taking MapRun to your Garmin Smartwatch is such an amazing progression. It is easy to forget because MapRun is so amazing that this is totally funded from donations. As a club we have donated and will continue to do so, however if you enjoy using MapRun then you can do so yourself via the link here:
Finally, we must thank some people who have contributed to helping to keep the club active during this challenging period. Firstly, we need to be thankful for Pat at North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club for teaching and supporting us in creating courses and uploading them into the MapRun system. Then we have the remarkable work of John Heaton who spent many hours Geo-referencing and updating maps as well planning some courses. Thanks also need to go to other planners such as Mark, Jim, Martin, Henry, Jonathan and Anne, who have all spent time planning courses that we can all enjoy. We will finish the year with a few more Festive MapRun’s so keep your eyes on our social media pages. Many thanks to everyone who has taken part in a MapRun Challenge this year. It has been fantastic to see so many new club members join.
At £8 this offers fantastic value and is a vital source of revenue to help keep the club operational in these challenging times! You can find all our membership options online:
